We became aware of Coffee Kids about 5 years ago at a coffee tradeshow. We feel they are the best charity related to the coffee industry. Coffee Kids helps to support the people working in the coffee producing countries, to improve their lives and the lives of their children.
Coffee Kids’ mission is to improve the quality of life for children and families who live in the coffee-growing communities around the world. Coffee Kids is laying the foundation for the future through education programs that provide scholarships for school supplies, uniforms, and transportation as well as grants to rural elementary schools for infrastructure, books and furniture.
Coffee Kids establishes small, democratically run community banks that provide women with access to low-interest credit to begin or improve their own small businesses. Interest generated by the loans is paid back to the community and used to develop the bank and pay its expenses. The emphasis of the program on savings and the goal is to create independent lending institutions.
Coffee Kids supports the development of solar-powered and renewable energy systems for use by independent coffee farmers and small cooperatives. One such tool is the Solar Coffee Dryer which enables small-scale farmers to dry their own harvest in an environmentally sustained way, and to earn more than five times as much profit for their labor.
